Goal: To hunt and sell 200 class Whitetail deer on and from the Bertani Ranch in Del Rio Texas.

 

Initially, the thought of the owners was to buy deer with better genetics from select South Texas ranches whose herds were over-populated and needed thinning. After bringing in one group around 1997 and a second in 2005, with a strong South Texas heritage, the owners have elevated to 160 class animals on the ranch.
At this point, the owners decided to shift gears and start a major push for 200 class bucks in Del Rio, Texas. With the help of some friends, and direction from the Circle C Ranch, we were able to obtain our scientific deer breeders permit in 2005.

The initial operation consisted of three paddocks, each approximately one acre in size. The ranch then acquired the bloodlines of some of the more famous deer from Texas - Geronimo, Honcho, Clint, and Treble Hook, to name a few. It did not take long to realize that three pens would only strangle the operation, so the ranch amended its scientific deer breeder permit and added another 14 acre pen. The game ranch is now in the process of adding an additional set of two pens.

The final phase in the process will be to selectively A.I. the game ranch's strongest bloodline does, which will start this coming November, 2006. With this the game ranch owners feel that they should be well on the way to raising free roaming, mature bucks from the 160 class they now have to the eventual goal of around 200.
